Why You Should Learn To Read Often

July 18, 2018

When was the last time you read a book? In the midst of the hustling and bustling, work and stress, we always forget to read. When we talk about reading, we are not referring to tweets or social media updates. We are talking about picking up a book – either hard or soft copy.

Most of the time, we underestimate the power of books. If you’re one of the countless people who don’t make a habit of reading regularly, you might be missing out; reading has a significant number of benefits, and we’ll just highlight a few.

Mental stimulation. Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy, and that is what reading offers. Reading helps your brain work better by thinking and imagining the content of the book, and giving you insights on how it can be applied to your everyday life.

More knowledge. The more you read books, the more you gain new information and ideas. Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might come in handy.

Vocabulary. What do you notice about those who read? Surely you would realize that the more you read, the more your use of vocabulary improves. Reading exposes you to words and phrases you probably have never come across.

You travel. Yes, you travel with books. Reading exposes you to other parts of the world; the people, their culture, food and much more.

Writing. If you are a good reader, you’re likely to be a good writer. That is because aside from brushing up your spoken English, you also learn better styles of writing through books.

Helps you focus. There’s every tendency that you’ll get engrossed when reading an interesting book. We live in an era where our attention span seems to be hitting the floor, due to social media and the many distractions attached with it. Reading will help you to focus better.

Boosts your thinking. This happens when you read a book – especially crime and mysteries and then you discover that you already know the ‘serial killer’ before the book comes to an end. Can you relate with this? Books make you think faster and boosts your imaginative mind.

Kills boredom. What do you do when you’re bored? Pick a book today and get yourself entertained.
